The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Back to Blog

Everything you need to know before embarking on the most extraordinary wildlife encounter on the planet — meeting mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Standing face to face with a mountain gorilla in the misty forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth. These gentle giants share 98.3% of our DNA and move through the forest with quiet dignity.

What to Expect

Gorilla trekking begins early. After a briefing at park headquarters, you are assigned to a family group and set off with expert trackers. Treks range from 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. Once you locate the family, you have exactly one hour with them — regulations strictly enforced to minimise stress on the animals.

Best Time to Visit

Bwindi can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer easier trekking with less mud. The forest is always atmospheric, wrapped in mist regardless of season.

Permits

Gorilla trekking permits cost $800 per person. Permits must be booked well in advance — popular dates sell out months ahead. Baker The Explorer handles all permit arrangements as part of your safari package.

Conservation Impact

Your permit fee directly funds gorilla conservation. Uganda's mountain gorilla population has grown from under 300 in the 1980s to over 459 today — a conservation success story made possible by responsible tourism.
